$5 furniture thrift flip!
I got this entertainment center from goodwill one Friday after work. Originally it was marked for $10, but as I was wandering the store for thrift ideas, a lady on the intercom announced that all furniture with white tags was 50% off! So I got this for $5! Here's how it looked when I first purchased it. It's not the cutest, or the most well built item. It's definitely a cheap piece of furniture as it's not real wood. I thought I could turn it into some type of closed storage for books and some not so cute "man cave" decor my boyfriend has laying around.
My first area to tackle on this was the bottom of it. There was some water damage on the corner "foot" as well as what looked like a part that a puppy thought would make a good chew toy. I took it over to my parents and sawed off the feet so that it basically sat flat on the floor.
I wanted this to be a nice pop of color for the apartment, but not too overwhelming. I wanted to originally paint it a cream color, but all the walls and cabinets in my apartment are cream so it just would've blended into the wall. I chose this green color in a chalk paint to keep with the boho style I have started. Originally it was a hulk green color and too much so I added in some cream to lighten it to a nice light green.
I had to do about 3 coats to fully cover this whole piece. I had intended to paint it all this green color, but after opening and closing the doors I realized they rubbed too much against the wood trim below, and over time the paint would probably just chip off and not be worth it. So I left the trim the natural look it came with.
After fully painting and cleaning up some edges, I then used a top coat to seal the paint and give it a finished look.
After letting the top dry, I removed the glass door and started the next step. I purchased some light cream colored linen fabric from Joann's and measured how much I would need to fill the glass on the backside. I was able to rip the fabric perfectly to the size I needed rather than cutting it out. I then used some hot glue and glued it down while pulling the fabric really tight so it didn't sag when you looked at it from the front.
Once I had it all glued in where I wanted and it was tight, I let it sit for a bit to finish drying and then trimmed any excess strings sticking out. Here's how the door looked when I finished it.
Then I just had to assemble it and place it where I wanted in the apartment! I love how this item turned out and that it only cost me $5! I can't wait to style it in my room and add more furniture with it!
I hope you enjoyed learning my process! I have more thrift flips coming soon, so stay tuned! Thank you for reading about this fun project. I hope this inspired you!
Stay thrifty! (:
